the chairman

somehow unbeknownst to my wife
I’ve merged beings with my purple chair
and the cat sits wedged
on one of my high back ears
knocking off my glasses

enough

a well-suited armchair comfy and
a pile of books a cup of coffee
some paper a pen small a rug
dogs under foot small dignities
take so much and seem to take more
and the cost is sweat and the cost
is blood and the cost is time and
we are told comfort is earned
and we are told we are
not working enough we are told
we are not
enough
