we’re all born aliens, all born with gills

you were too small
looked like the world
might swallow you up

I am so glad
it didn’t

rocks (for Stella)

we share this thing about rocks
this and an odd inflexibility

about certain things
rocks, you know, are impermeable

enough in water, slow to wear or break
making them time keepers across millenia

that odd inflexibility, we share
we and the rocks, our lines and cracks

and dimples, some that only shine
when splashed with water

means, though, we are not
entirely immune
