the family of ducks have laid siege to the wharf
we are all here kicking mad under the water:
necessary adaptations under the new regime

today will I caste my luck onto the waters?

the river is a gambler, what a bluffer!
we walk the staging back and forth,
dry land to floating steel
play the hand dealt us

today: fire and falling waters after another night of rain

the heart will not be doused silent forever

take in the sun you salamander you. the grass will not grow itself. we ride the river south at dawn when the high water currents are sleepiest. keep yer boots dry for the rainy season. dry rot seeps into the wood ‘tween the ears.

follow the river up route 42. take the Rabbit Hash road. Avoid the air traps. Watch the flight configurations of birds of prey.

but instead: a family lunch, a bit of shopping, cooking shows, moving books,

telling the Vietnamese lady next door
over my dogs barking

/ no, I won’t interrupt my dinner to do yardwork /

the scent of burning plastic, the sounds of lawnmowers an incense, a song

we fake ambivalence over rumors
of falling river levels

watching the water for signs
under an eclipsing sun
