a short trip east
to the mountains, ancient rocks
on which are written
earth’s histories erased
slowly, mysteries remembered

broken tanka on an early September storm

the rain rolls in
along the river, rips
the heat (a thin t-shirt)
in half with a perfume
that dreams of Autumn
